Two men have been arrested during a two-day Customs anti-smuggling operation in Teesport.
Customs officers at Teesport, supported by officers from Customs' National Strike Force seized over 220,000 cigarettes, 53 kilograms of hand rolling tobacco and a quantity of cash during the two day operation.
The duty evaded amounted to approximately £40, 000. Two cars, a Vauxhall Astra and a Citroen Xantia, which had been used to transport smuggled goods, were also seized.
Stuart Wishart, Head of Anti Smuggling North East said; "The success of this operation shows how local Customs teams coupled with our National Strike Force can be deployed flexibly and to good effect in areas of greatest risk."
