Pupils at Northgate Junior School, Guisborough, were visited by the Royal Society to honour their energy project.
A solar panel and a wind turbine were installed at the school and they have assessed both power sources by working out how many laps two train sets can complete. They have also used the power to irrigate school flowerbeds. The project is part of the Royal Society's Partnership Grant Scheme, set up to link schools with scientists and engineers.
Deputy head Angela Hull, who came up with the idea, said: "Geoff Broome, an engineer at the BP Cats Terminal and Steve Picktall, senior electrical technicial, were able to turn my idea into reality."
CBP Cats' electrical contractor, Dron and Dickinson Group, donated the solar panel and wind turbine
