Cleveland County League

Apowerful performance by Cleveland county Bowling Association's Newton team has given the county a good chance of winning the northern division of the EBF national championships. While the Adams team shared rinks 3 all with Northumberland, the Newton team won on 5 rinks to take 20 of the 22 points. Best rinks were G.Cook (S.Hutchinson, T.York) and R.Serginson (N.Routledge, D.Jones). Cleveland were second to Derbyshire before the match but this result leaves the points totals level and with both teams at home in their final matches the outcome could not be closer.

At the halfway stage it is business as usual so far as Brinkburn Dene are concerned - top of the A division. There is still hope for several teams, however, as this season their lead is only by two points whereas last year at this time they led by seven-and-a-half points.

Things are much closer this season. Last year's promoted team, Hundens, can be especially proud of their progress as they are pressing the leaders in second place. Railway Athletic came unstuck at Middleton St George, but although losing a close game retain third place. South Park B and North Lodge are favourites to go down and look certain to be replaced by South Park A and Woodland B who are proving to be too strong for the best of the B division.

Results: A Division: Brinkburn Dene A 4, North Park 0; East Park 1, Hundens A 3; Barnard Castle A 3, South Park B 1; North Lodge 1, Woodland A 3; Middleton St Geroge 3, Railway Athletic A 1.

B Division: Railway Athletic B v Woodland C postponed; South Park A 3, Barnard Castle B; Hundens B 2, Brinkburn Dene 2.
