BACKERS at Beverley should take note of the fact that top Newmarket trainer Michael Jarvis sends just one runner, Kibryaa (3.15), to the track this afternoon.

Kibryaa, a superbly bred son of Silver Hawk, gave notice that his turn was imminent when splitting Majorca and Lets Roll at Newcastle last time out. There was certainly nothing wrong with that effort because Majorca is highly rated within the powerful John Gosden ranks, while Lets Roll has since captured a £20,000 handicap at Redcar.

"He's a tough horse and I expect him to win his fair share of races," said Jarvis, who still has his stable in prime form following a particularly productive week at Royal Ascot in June.

High numbers in sprints nearly always hold sway, so, theoretically at least, Torrent (3.45) must be one for the short-list in the Hall Golden Anniversary Handicap.

Torrent, a previous track and trip scorer, responds generously to the expert handling of Lisa Jones, and seeing as the pacey gelding is set to emerge from stall 18, they should have their rivals on the stretch from the word go

Although Boris The Spider hasn't a totally convincing profile, he just about gets the nod in the closing extended one mile Apprentice Handicap. A maiden three-year-old with a markedly high knee action, which normally means the individual concerned requires easy ground, Boris The Spider has been running reasonably well in defeat so far this term.

The uphill nature of the home straight at the course, plus the forecast good to soft surface, represent good omens for the selection, who has been found a poor event by Micky Hammond in order to try and break his duck.

Mark Wallace is an up-and-coming young trainer who is rapidly making a name for himself in sprint races.

Wallace was extremely unlucky not to add one more to his seasonal tally of 11 when Campeon was caught right on the line in a seven furlong contest at Brighton recently.

Having suffered the heartbreak of such a narrow reverse, Mark has opted run Campeon (2.30) over a furlong less in the opener at the Sussex venue, a sensible ploy fancied to bring the right result in the Andrex Median Auction Stakes.

Inconsistency has dogged the career of Tony Carroll's Ziet d'Alsace, a filly quite capable of winning the Wharton Slaney Bookmakers Handicap if in the mood.

Having gone close over course and distance on her penultimate outing, she then flopped badly at Kempton when only beating two from a field of 13. Ziet d'Alsace (5.00) is much better than that and if Ian Mongan can prevent her from sulking a decent-priced winning nap beckons.

* Attraction is on course to return to racecourse action next month. Mark Johnston's star filly is being given a break after finishing second to Soviet Song in the Group One Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket last week.

''We have just been giving her a nice little break, which has always been the intention really after four quick runs in Group One company. Those races are so tough and she has been unbelievable,'' Deirdre Johnston, the trainer's wife and assistant said.
