OLYMPIC gold medallist Tessa Sanderson was the guest yesterday at the launch of awards recognising learning achievements.
The Tees Valley Celebration of Learning Awards 2004, which honour the achievements of some of Tees Valley's most outstanding youngsters, are the result of a partnership between The Learning and Skills Council Tees Valley, Connexions Tees Valley and JobCentre Plus.
Sanderson, who won javelin gold at the 1984 Olympics, said: "It's very important to give young people all the encouragement and support they need to fulfil their potential, whether they are focused on the sporting arena or academic studies."
Dave Irwin, acting chief executive of Connexions Tees Valley, said: "Tessa is an excellent role model for the youth of today, and proof that hard work and dedication really do reap dividends. There are many young people in the Tees Valley area who are very capable of following in her footsteps and look set to become the champions of tomorrow."
Last year's awards were endorsed by Prime Minister Tony Blair and he is being invited to attend this year's presentation.
