A STUDENT with cerebral palsy has successfully completed work experience in Germany during her first trip away without her parents.
Emma Briggs, from Prior Pursglove Sixth Form College, in Guisborough, recently returned from Troisforf, near Bonn, and Cologne, where she worked in a secondary school.
The 19-year-old, who hopes to study history at Teesside University, uses a wheelchair, has visual problems and has a support worker at college.
But she seized the opportunity to visit Germany, working with classes and telling pupils about her life in Britain and her disability.
"This was my first visit abroad away from my family and it was a great help to have Sue, my support worker, with me," she said.
"The whole experience has boosted my confidence. I got on well with the other students who went from the college, didn't stick out and did everything I did. I was treated like any other student."
Pat Lewis, senior tutor with responsibility for special learning difficulties and disabilities, said: "All young people should have chances like this and Emma has proved that all the work and effort, on the part of the staff, is well worth it.
"She is a determined and courageous young lady, who it has been a pleasure to work with.
"When she looks back at her time in education, I guess this trip to Germany will be one of her best memories."
Emma, from Wilton Village, near Redcar, attended Huntcliff School, in Saltburn, where she gained five GCSEs.
She gained two AS-levels last year in philosophy and sociology.
