Year nine pupils from Hurworth House School, near Darlington, travelled to the Yorkshire Dales to study the area's carboniferous limestone.
The boys travelled to Swaledale where they spent a day learning to identify various sedimentary rock types, such as sandstone, gritstone and shale.
Pupils from other year groups have also visited the area to work out the dale's glacial history and record such features as waterfalls, meanders and river beaches.
