A LOCAL club has received £1,000 to help create a new sports and arts venue.

Redcar Amateur Boxing and Sports Club, which moved into Coatham Memorial Hall, in Redcar, four years ago, hopes the hall could eventually be used for community activities, including boxing, badminton, table tennis, basketball, keep fit and concerts.

The club has completed the first round of improvements to the building, owned by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

The main hall, toilets, and meeting room have been refurbished and new lighting, flooring, heating, and security installed.

The club has received £19,874 funding from the European Development Fund, along with donations from local businesses, Health Action Zone, and the Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's Single Regeneration Budget.

The £1,000 from Redcar's rotary club, which will go towards refurbishing the changing rooms.

Club secretary Frankie Wales said: "Since moving into the hall four years ago, we have strived to refurbish this neglected building.

"Help from local organisations and local businesses and now this £1,000 from the Rotary Club has made a massive difference to our goal."

Anyone who can help the club is asked to call (01642) 478996.
