A BARMAID has been shortlisted for an award after spending years cheering up customers with her smile.

Pauline Rushton, who has worked behind the bar at the Blue Bell Hotel in Acklam, Middlesbrough, for 32 years, has been shortlisted for the Most Cheerful Bar Person award.

The prize is part of the 2004 Tees Valley Smile Awards scheme, which was launched in April to recognise the region's unsung heroes.

It is sponsored by the Tees Valley Tourism Bureau and supported by TFM radio.

The award organisers asked for nominations for people who embodied the warm friendly welcome that visitors and tourist expect from the area.

Pauline was nominated by regulars at the Barracuda-owned pub.

She beat hundreds of other nominees to get through to the last three in her category.

The results will be announced at an awards ceremony, on Thursday, at Guisborough Hall.
