A 78-year-old woman died of a blood haemorrhage hours after hitting her head in a fall, an inquest heard yesterday.
Eleanor Quinn Lock, 78, of Glebeside, Frosterley, died in Bishop Auckland General Hospital on July 8.
Relatives took Mrs Lock to her doctor and then to hospital after she slipped in the kitchen of her home.
She was sent home after an x-ray of her head showed no fracture or bleeding on the brain, but she later returned to the hospital because she was vomiting.
Pathologist Dr Tony Senadhira said Mrs Lock had suffered a brain haemorrhage after leaving the hospital and that it would not have been detected on a scan.
He said Mrs Lock also suffered narrowing of the blood vessels to the heart and brain, which could explain her frequent falls.
Deputy Coroner Kenneth Howe, sitting at Bishop Auckland police station, recorded a verdict of accidental death.
