A PRE-SCHOOL which almost closed after it lost its premises, yesterday celebrated the opening of its new home.
Romanby Preschool, in Romanby, near Northallerton, prepared to close last year after church leaders announced plans to sell St James' Church Hall, where it had been based for 35 years.
The group moved to a classroom at the Sacred Heart RC school and also used the local Methodist church hall, while staff tried to find permanent premises.
Their dreams came true last July when the National Lottery's Community Fund announced a £107,000 grant.
With £25,000 from the New Opportunities Fund and support from local businesses, the pre-school was able to set up its new home in a portable classroom in the grounds of Romanby School.
The group moved in on June 7 and is now running nine sessions a week for the 68 children on the register, plus a before and after-school club for pupils at the primary school.
Yesterday the new premises were formally opened by youngsters from the after-school club.
Office administrator Linda Walters said: "We didn't want any dignitaries or politicians to open it because it has been all about the children.
"When we were told that we would have to find another building, we did think that this could be the end.
"But when you have got 12 wonderful staff and about 60 children, you can't think that way.
"It has been a struggle but when you come in the building and see the children playing, it makes it all worthwhile. There is so much space, we can leave toys and equipment out. Before we had to take them all away in our cars and put them in our garages.
"We have always had plenty of children because we have a good reputation - it is accommodating them that has been the problem."
The pre-school is also setting up a holiday club and is planning to take on another leader for the out-of-school club as it has proved so popular.
