A RESIDENT has taken his complaint over plans for speed humps in his street to a council.
John Campbell has written to Middlesbrough Mayor Ray Mallon and council officials, questioning plans to introduce traffic calming measures into the Middlesbrough cul-de-sac where he lives.
The 50-year-old feels so strongly that public money is being wasted that he is to address Middlesbrough Council's complaints and appeals committee.
Middlesbrough Council is spending £120,000 on bringing in a 20 mph speed limit and speed humps on Aviemore Road, Hemlington, and surrounding streets.
Mr Campbell lives on Amesbury Crescent, a 150-metre-long cul-de-sac next to Aviemore Road.
He said: "There is a problem on Aviemore, people use it like a race track and there have been accidents. Everyone agrees something must be done.
"But I can't understand why they want to put humps in a cul-de-sac. It's very rare to be able to do more than 20 mph in the street.
"If there was a problem, I would support a solution but I have been living here since 1976 and I have never known any problem here.
"It is a waste of money when there are other things they could be doing with it."
He has presented the council with a petition signed by neighbours, calling for their street to be left alone.
Middlesbrough Council said Aviemore Road and its surrounding area was selected in response to calls for action from residents and ward councillors.
It said 92 per cent of people consulted said they wanted some kind of traffic-calming measures.
A survey found that most people using Aviemore Road flouted the 30 mph speed limit. There have been nine people injured in accidents on the road in five years.
