The Burn Valley Half Marathon once again provided a testing run, made more so by the windy conditions. Alasdair Tatham of Quakers RC came home first in a creditable time of 81.03, and Cameron Choules was the first Thirsk and Sowerby finisher, in 20th place in 91.15.
Alan Somers came 42nd in 97.48, Martin Frith 70th in 103.25, Graham Banks 76th in 103.42, Hywel Smith 79th in 104.52, Alan Harman 87th in 107.15, Nicola Thorpe 110th in 111.58, Ian Codling 178th in 125.45, Fiona Wilson 193rd in 131.36, and Jo Fambely, Nik Sutton-Haigh and Kaye Mechie finished in line in 213th place, on 147.01. The 226 finishers enjoyed a fine tea in Masham Town Hall afterwards as a reward for their run!
Five members were among the 69 finishers in the Guisborough Grunt Fell Race, the fifth in the Northern Runner Summer Series.
Alan Somers was 33rd in 48.08, Hywel Smith 38th in 49.49, Alan Wikeley 45th in 49.54, Alaadair Thorpe 45th in 50.58 and Steve Harrison 61st in 55.39. The team finished in third place.
The fifth and final fixture in the HDSRR League before the Handicap on July 21st, took place at Richmond, with Swaledale Runners acting as hosts. As ever, Ian Fisher of Otley won the event in a time of 27.28, over a testing course on a dark, damp evening. Gary Dunn finished 5th in 29.36, Richard Hall 13th in 31.40, Philip Utley 40th in 34.23, Hywel Smith 61st in 36.43, just in front of Angela Hall in 36.44 and Ernie Huck in 36.47, David Shorrocks 66th in 37.04, Will Hayward 73rd in 38.21, Alan Wikeley 79th in 38.51, the same time as Tom Thompson, Stewart McLauchlan 87th in 39.29, Nicola Thorpe 100th in 40.40, Sarah Somers 105th in 41.09, Pat Kirby 108th in 41.24, Maureen Gibbs 123rd in 43.30, Ian Codling 129th in 43.47, Kaye Mechie 134th in 44.33, Jo Fambely 145th in 47.27 and Pamela Sherlock 160th in 51.43. This was the seventh event in the Club Championship, and members have a pause over the summer before the next one, the fell race, Cock Howe and beyond, on August 31st.
