A team of Darlington FC supporters will be playing against fans of clubs from across the country this weekend when they compete in one of the largest football tournaments in the country.
Uncovered FC, representatives of the Darlo Uncovered website (www.darlofc.co.uk), are all Darlington supporters and for the first time they'll be competing in the WorldNET Sports Interactive Cup alongside another 63 teams.
The club formed three-and-a-half years ago and throughout the season play matches against the fans of opposition clubs in the morning ahead of games between their favourite sides, but this is the first time they've entered WorldNET which takes place in Leeds.
Teams from as far afield as Southampton, Livingston in the Scottish Highlands and even a team representing Italian giants Inter Milan will converge on Boddington Hall for the three-day event which begins this evening although Uncovered's match isn't until tomorrow morning.
The tournament features group stages first followed by a knockout stage and Uncovered have been drawn against the fans of Doncaster Rovers, Dunfermline and SIC who also are the tournament sponsors and will feature former Liverpool and Ireland legend, Ray Houghton, in their side.
SIC are the people behind computer game Championship Manager to which Houghton is an advisor and the midfielder, who almost ten years ago scored the winning goal against Italy at the USA World Cup Finals, will hoping to roll back the years against the Darlington fans.
Uncovered, who are managed by David Aiken who tops the club's appearances (47) and scoring (48) charts, go into the tournament in decent form having recorded five wins in their last nine games, losing just two and finding the net on 21 occasions.
The most recent victory came two weeks ago as they warmed-up for WorldNET with a 2-1 win over Yorkie Bars, supporters of York City, and Aiken says the win gives side confidence ahead of the prestigious tournament.
"We weren't at our best against York, but with a strong wind to contend with we defended well against a team who've beaten us in the past.
"We've never before played the majority of teams in the tournament so they are basically unknown to us so we'll just go out there and play our own game and let the opposition worry about us. The lads are well up for this, it's certainly the biggest tournament any of us have ever played in so we've just got to give it our all.
"The games are only short and we have a pretty solid defence so if we get into a lead I'm confident we will go on to win the game, but at the end of the day we've got to do the right things on the pitch by passing the ball around and make the opposition do the chasing.
"We have a great team spirit, and having endured a hard season watching Darlington FC together, hopefully we can go to Leeds and do a good job of representing the team we all support."
The games each last 30 minutes and during the knockout stages drawn games will go to a short period of extra-time but if that fails to produce a winner then a penalty shoot-out will be required, and Aiken hopes non of his players repeats David Beckham's spot-kick nightmare.
He said: "Penalties are a lottery so if we were to lose a shoot-out then nobody can complain, unless someone does a 'Beckham', then they'll get some stick!"
Before the tournament has even started the squad is suffering from injury problems with several players carrying knocks so Uncovered anticipate using their all of their 18 players at some point.
The Uncovered squad competing at WorldNET, including squad numbers, is:
1 Nick Woodward; 2 Paul Baker; 4 Phil Thornberry; 5 Gary Barden; 6 Matty Ashmore
7 Chris Johnson; 8 Craig Stoddart; 9 David Aiken; 10 Scott Thornberry; 11 Dan King; 13 David Robinson; 14 Thomas Breedon; 16 James Black; 18 Paul Sunter; 22 Dan Brown; 23 Chris Elliott; 24 Stu Hardy; 25 Andrew Christoffersen.
