ONE of the North-East's leading businesswomen received an honorary award from the University of Sunderland yesterday.
Former Tyne Tees boss, and current One NorthEast chairman, Margaret Fay was recognised for her contribution to public life in the region.
During her 22 years with Tyne Tees, the South Shields-born businesswoman was renowned for her open and direct style.
Ms Fay was awarded an OBE last month for her services to broadcasting.
She was appointed chairman of regional development agency One NorthEast in December 2003, taking over from John Bridge.
Ms Fay has established a strong relationship with the business community and is a board member of the North East Chamber of Commerce Regional Council and a director of Darlington Building Society and English Partnerships.
She is also trustee of Tees Valley Community Foundation.
At yesterday's ceremony, she received an honorary doctorate of business administration (Hon DBA) from university chancellor Lord Puttnam, for her contribution to the cultural and business life of the region.
