A COMMUNITY playscheme has been launched at a school. Part of the playground at Cassop Primary School, County Durham, has been converted into a sensory garden with rides and a climbing frame.
It will be used by pre-school children in the village and younger children who attend the school.
The idea is to provide youngsters with an environment they can play in while learning at the same time.
Headteacher Jim McManners said: "Young children need a different curriculum that involves more explanation and active learning. An outdoor door area is very desirable at this stage."
To celebrate, pupils and parents held a procession following a deep sea theme with children dressed as sharks, octopi and a yellow submarine.
The garden was opened on Thursday by outgoing school governor Des Wilkinson, who is stepping down after more than 20 years' service.
Mr McManners is looking for parent volunteers who will open and close the garden outside school hours. Anyone interested can call 0191-377 0293.
