CHILDREN at Beech Grove Primary School, South Bank, have something to shout about after raising £400 through a sponsored silence.

Each of the school's six classes kept quiet for periods ranging from 15 minutes up to an hour to raise the cash for the Teesside Hospice Care Foundation.

Other fundraising events, including collections at the school's Christmas play and a recent production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, boosted the total to £750.

Headteacher Tracy Clarvis said: "It was a fantastic achievement. The school was peace itself throughout the silence.

"It was quite difficult for the younger children to stay quiet for 15 minutes, but they all achieved it. All in all we managed to raise more than we thought we could raise - the children and parents have been really generous. The school chose the hospice as it is celebrating its 21st anniversary and the children thought it would be a good cause to support."
