Rain decimated the local programme for the fifth week in a row - but while last month saw cancellations, delayed starts, interruptions and abandonments, on Saturday it was a near wipe-out.

All fixtures in the Darlington Building Society NYSD Premier League Division One were called off and in the Premier Division just one game went ahead.

Northallerton managed to stage their top-of-the-table clash with Guisborough and were rewarded with a win which took them top.

Following a delayed start, Northallerton posted 164 for the loss of half their wickets in 44 overs. After conceding two early wickets they recovered through a third-wicket partnership between Mark Stainsby and Jonathan Barnes which produced 111 runs.

Stainsby departed after striking six boundaries in 51, but Barnes remained undefeated with 81 which included one six and seven fours.

Guisborough were in trouble from the start of their reply as George Kay claimed the wickets of openers Saul Clifford and Imran Jan for a combined total of six.

Richard Dunn and Stephen Pennock stemmed the tide but once Barnes took the wickets of both batsmen, the end followed for a total of only 93 in 39.1 overs.

In the Federation Special Durham Senior League three leading sides all managed to play.

At Hetton Lyons, Boldon made an early strike with the removal of Gerry Strydom and accurate bowling from Philip Shakespeare and Gareth Smith held the home side at bay. Late acceleration from David Naunton and Andrew Loscombe took the Lyons to 131.

Boldon promoted Orlanzo Jackson and Gareth Smith up the batting order in an attempt to give them a chance from their 22 overs but this proved ineffective. It was then a case of survival when they were 11 for four and they halted any further challenge.

Burnmoor's contest with Seaham Harbour became an uphill struggle after losing the spin-up. Some urgent batting by Burnmoor meant rapid progress and a late flourish by Mark Robson and Gary Brown added 37 in the final 17 minutes. This took Burnmoor to 124 and the declaration was applied. With 29 overs to bowl out Seaham, early success was essential.

However, it wasn't until the eighth over that Martin Gill was removed. Seaham's resistance came from Gary Cunliffe and Steve Sennett and when Alex Ludlow dismissed them in the same over, it gave Burnmoor false hopes.

Whitburn scored freely from the off against Felling. Professional Ashley Thorpe (66) smashed ten fours and two sixes in his 50 minute stay and Neil Ayre was equally effective. Ayre was unbeaten on 68 from 48 deliveries when Whitburn declared at 153.

Felling were never in contention, as wickets fell around Daryl Warden (39 not out). Despite four wickets from Paul Cook, Whitburn only collected seven scalps and the game was drawn.

Only one game went ahead in The Readers Durham County League and Esh Winning consolidated fourth position defeating Mainsforth by five wickets.

The visitors' innings were reduced to 35 overs when they realised 114 for eight. David Thompson stood defiant and, after going in at number four, finished undefeated on 30. Ian Corrick conceded 29 runs in ten overs, taking three wickets.

Esh's winning reply was founded on a second-wicket stand of 60 between John Carmedy, whose 35 included two sixes and three boundaries, and Karl Turner. He made the game's top score of 49.

Murton strengthened their grip on the Durham Coast League leadership when they won one of only two games played.

Seaham Park slumped to 53 all out as Calvin Stephenson claimed seven for 28 in 13.5 overs and Shaun Smith 3-25 in 12 overs.

Although Murton lost four wickets after Min Mahil and Shaun Bradbury scored 30 between them when they opened, the leaders were never in danger and with second-top Silksworth having their game at Houghton washed out, now enjoy a comfortable cushion.

Shoaib Akhtar was Dawdon's matchwinner at Boldon CA where he batted throughout for an undefeated 94 in a one-wicket victory.

Chris Allen almost snatched the win for the home side taking five for 46 runs and Karl Bellerby picked up a couple of wickets but Dawdon just edged home.

When they batted first Boldon realised 121 and most of the runs came from Andy O'Connell with 49 and Neil Crooks (39).

Ashington extended their lead in the Foster's Northumberland and Tyneside Senior League with victory over Swalwell.

Simon Prudhoe batted throughout for an unbeaten 100, adding 148 for the second wicket with Ben Harmison (66) and, although Stephen Humble returned 3-36 in 13 overs, the Colliers still posted 182-5 in a reduced 45 overs.

Swalwell's reply never threatened and ended after 30.5 overs with only 89 on the board.

Second-top Tynedale led the table for most of the season, but have lost their last two matches.

Their latest defeat came at the hands of Benwell and Walbottle whose total of 179 was too big.

Leadgate, who made 118-9, shot out Shotley Bridge at The Spa for only 52 as Masood Mirza returned figures of five wickets for six runs.

Whickham look doomed after losing at Newcastle City.
