YOUNG readers who helped a library become children-friendly have met one of their literary heroes.
Consett Library has achieved Investors in Children accreditation.
Staff consulted the library's Chatterbooks reading group on how to improve facilities.
The youngsters responded by helping to paint the walls and noticeboards in bright colours. They also had a say in choosing books, furniture and fittings, and preparing a range of activities for the summer holidays.
They were rewarded for their efforts with a visit by Terry Deary, author of the Horrible Histories series.
Mr Deary, who lives in Burnhope, near Consett, presented group members with certificates and took part in a book discussion group.
The library's summer activities programme starts with a kitemaking workshop for children aged seven and over, on Thursday, from 9.30am to 11am. Tickets cost £1.
Other events include a teddy bears' picnic for the under-fives and a magic show.
The programme, part funded by Consett North Partnership, runs until August 26.
