RESIDENTS have a new road where pedestrians are more important than cars.

Durham County Council has created its second home zone by giving an unsurfaced street in New Brancepeth a makeover and declaring it one-way.

The street that serves Prospect Terrace and Edward Terrace has been transformed with block paving, trees, shrub-planters, lighting and signs and can only be accessed from the Hawthorne Terrace end.

A council spokesman said the zones were areas where cars did not dominate and people were more important.

The work, which cost £188,000, was carried out by Service Direct, the council's construction arm.

Residents were asked their views as the scheme developed.

Funding came from the counnty council, Durham City Council's single regeneration budget and Durham villages partnership, and Brandon and Byshottles Parish Council.

A similar scheme was carried out in Asquith Street and Galt Street, Thornley.
