A NINE-YEAR-OLD soprano has won an award for his contribution to the community and his performances with a church choir.
Ryan Johnson received the Child in the Community award at Green Gates Primary School's end-of-term assembly, in Redcar, on Friday.
He was chosen by a judging panel of teachers for activities including performances in the St Cuthbert's Church choir, at Kirkleatham Village.
Ryan was the first winner of the award set up by Top Lakes Residents' Association, which is disbanding this year.
The group has enough money for the award to be presented for the next ten years and for tree planting on the school field.
The trophy will be kept in school, but Ryan has a replica to keep.
Headteacher Henry Skene, who chaired the panel which picked Ryan from a shortlist of three, said: "We are delighted to make the award to Ryan for the work he has put into the local community and his dedication to being a member of the church choir."
Councillor Mary Ovens, a governor at Green Gates Primary School and association vice-chair, said: "The award is our way of ensuring the association and the work it did is not forgotten.
"Green Gates was always supportive of our efforts in the community. We are very pleased that Ryan is the first winner."
