CHRIS Tomlinson faces an anxious wait this morning before learning whether or not he has made the British squad for next month's Olympic Games in Athens.
The Middlesbrough-based long jumper travelled to Madrid this weekend in one final attempt to achieve the 'A' qualifying distance of 8.19m.
But, while his best leap of 7.99m represented an improvement from his recent display at the British trials, it has left him at the mercy of the selectors as they meet in London.
Tomlinson currently holds the 'B'qualifying mark, which is not enough to assure him of a place in the British team.
The selectors can choose to take one athlete who has achieved the 'B'mark, and Tomlinson's career-best of 8.27m suggests he is more than capable of making the long jump final in Greece.
The 22-year-old smashed the UK indoor record earlier this year and is in fine form despite his failure to reach the IAAF's mark.
But Tomlinson could yet miss out in favour of Nathan Morgan after the Birchfield Harrier confirmed his fitness following an appendix operation.
Morgan passed the 'A'qualifying mark when he jumped 8.26m to win in Hamburg last year and, while that jump no longer counts towards Olympic qualification, the selectors will take his long injury lay-off into account.
Only one of the two jumpers can make the team, and the selectors are understood to be split on their final verdict.
