CHILDREN and parents started the first day of the summer holiday with a family learning day.

Young people and adults enjoyed activities at Waldridge Village Hall yesterday.

Taster courses in digital photography and healthy eating were available, while families worked on arts and crafts.

Durham County Council education and community development worker Darren Raby helped organise the event with Waldridge Village Hall Association.

He said: "It was a family learning day to get the parents in the community to learn some fun activities with their children, such as making a toy sack.

"We want people to use community venues more for this sort of thing because some people do not realise what their villages halls are for.

"They seem to be becoming a lost resource, and we want to promote the family learning aspect.

"It is not just for children -parents can learn a lot too."
