A FATHER and son who started a fracas on a maternity unit were both jailed for nine months yesterday.
On February 19, Ian Murray, 41, and his son, Stuart Murray, 21, had gone to see his daughter, Kelly Murray, who was in labour at the Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Newcastle Crown Court heard the pair had been drinking and were abusive and aggressive towards hospital staff and were violent when security guards were called.
Tim Parkin, prosecuting, said one of the guards was struck on the head during the incident.
Police were called and the pair, both of Kingsway, Houghton-le-Spring, were arrested after a fire door was damaged and a knife was found.
Ian Murray admitted affray and having an offensive weapon in a public place.
His son admitted affray, possession of a throwing knife and a charge of damaging property.
Judge Guy Whitburn said: "It is impossible for the court not to impose a custodial sentence when behaviour like this is used against people such as hospital staff."
