WORK on upgrading a rundown east Durham shopping parade has received a boost.
Improvements are under way on the row of retail outlets in the Edenhill Road area of Peterlee, but Groundwork East Durham has been commissioned to lend a further helping hand.
The Edenhill Project is a Home Office initiative aimed at improving life for residents through community involvement.
After consultation with the Edenhill and Chapel Hill North Residents' Association, the first phase of environmental improvements was carried out, including the installation of a new fence and pavement as well as tree surgery to make the area more attractive.
Two new bus shelters have also been built in the area by Easington District Council.
Groundwork East Durham has been commissioned to undertake further improvements.
The work was funded from Neighbourhood Renewal money secured through Easington council's Community Safety Partnership.
Councillor Rob Crute, who is chairing the project, said: "Edenhill Road shopping area is an important place for local people, and these improvements will be the first phase of major plans to make it more attractive and accessible."
