FAMILIES are being urged to have a day out during the school holidays and boost the region's tourism industry.
One NorthEast, which has taken over the promotion of tourism from the Northumbria Tourism Board, has produced a guide, Great Summer Days Out, in time for the start of the long break.
The brochure, which is available free from Tourist Information Centres, lists attractions, parks, activities, shopping centres and events, from the Tweed to the Tees.
Val Lowther, of the development agency's tourism team, said: "This is the first time we have produced the brochure.
"The idea is that it coincides with the start of the holidays and encourages people to get out and about in the region.
"It is a way of saying to youngsters, 'kids, you can't be bored this holiday, there are plenty of things to do and places to visit'.
"A lot of people are surprised at the things on their doorstep.
"The brochure will primarily appeal to people looking for days out. It is also a way of helping to promote tourism in the region."
The brochure can also be seen online at the website www.visit northumbria.com
It was officially unveiled yesterday on Durham's Palace Green with a launch of balloons by local youngsters.
