The first Sunderland International Airshow was in 1989 as part of the River Wear Festival, a six-week summer programme.
Held at Seaburn, the first airshow took place on the Sunday afternoon only.
It was meant to be a one-off display, but police estimated that 250,000 people turned up and, due to its popularity, it was decided to make the show an annual event.
In 1992, the show became a two-day event in order to encourage stronger support from the RAF, as well as exhibitors and traders.
It is now the biggest free event of its kind in Europe and every piece of available space is utilised by traders, entertainers and exhibitors, from Seaburn showfield to Marine Walk, at Roker.
The RAF's premier aerobatic display team, The Red Arrows made their first appearance at the event back in 1992.
In all 16 shows, The RAF Falcons Parachute Team and aircraft from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight have appeared.
Displays from Russia, Hungary, Jordan, the US, France, Belgium and the Netherlands have been part of the airshow.
In 1998, Russian test pilot, Anatoly Kvotchor amazed the crowds with his display in a Sukhoi SU27.
The US air force made its first appearance at the show in 2001, when its front line fighter jet, the Stealth Fighter, F117A Nighthawk took part in the flying programme.
On the ground, celebrities who have made guest appearances have included Ant and Dec, Midge Ure, Sarah Lancashire, The Tweenies, Steve Harley, The Christians and Hear'say.
