A CHEWING gum clearance squad is targeting a high street this week in an attempt to improve beachfront areas over the summer.
A team of six workers - a woman and five men - who cleared up the streets of Saltburn last week, have been starting work at 6am in Redcar High Street to avoid the crowds.
They have been recruited to boost manpower on three area-based teams, covering Redcar, Marske, Saltburn and Skinningrove, as part of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's drive for a cleaner look along the beachfront areas.
Another clean-up is taking place, sweeping sand up to 2ft deep between the Majuba Road car park and the Zetland Park roundabout.
Dog owners are also being warned of the beach's dog-free zone at Redcar, between Graffenburg Street and the Regent Cinema.
Signs say dogs are banned from the beach up to September 30 and must be kept on a lead along the Esplanade.
Councillor Bob Stanway, the council's cabinet member for environmental improvement, said: "We hope people will notice a difference this summer."
