TIPSTER turned owner Henry Rix was delighted at Newbury when Everest won another short-head valuable handicap, following his win at Newmarket's July meeting.
None other than the champion jockey Kieren Fallon was in the saddle for Brian Ellison's charge, who beat Vortex (Gay Kelleway) by a narrow margin to land a prize of some £23,200. Rix said that he and his three co-owners had for the second time had a good touch.
Ellison was also on the mark at Market Rasen, while Bryan Smart's Bond City was an interesting third in the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury, a rewarding each-way bet at 33-1.
Up at Newmarket, Stanley Chin grabbed the mile and three-quarter race by the scruff of the neck a full three furlongs out to win well for Mark Johnston on Bendarshaan.
We fancy Bandari to land the King George tomorrow and, at 14 or 16-1, is worth each-way support. Johnston also won at Hamilton and at Catterick this week, while Gateman was a valiant second in an Ayr distance race.
Nigel Tinkler doesn't often venture to Lingfield, but on Saturday evening sent down Tre Colline to win under the irrepressible Frankie Dettori.
Howard Johnson followed last week's John Smith's Cup win for Graham and Andrea Wylie by sending out Abraxas Antelope to win at Doncaster on Thursday evening, with man-of-the-moment Robert Winston in the plate.
This dual winner now looks set to run the Gimcrack at York next month as a result. "He's in it, so he might as well run. Graham likes making speeches," said the trainer, referring to the annual speech made by the owner of the winner of the race.
Two homebreds won for two well-known owners, Scotland The Brave for Robert Gibbons, trained by James Bethell, who also trained her dam, Hunters Of Brora, winner of the Lincoln on the same course in 1998, and Word Perfect for Mrs Jean Turpin, trained by Mick Easterby, who said the filly will improve over six furlongs. Easterby had a good Monday, with wins at Ayr and Beverley.
Richard Fahey had an across-the-cards double within some 20 minutes on Thursday, when Mr J J Staunton's colours were carried to victory by Oldenway at Hamilton and Marshallspark at Leicester. Oldenway was claimed for £30,000 by M Stavrou.
Peter Savill enjoyed racing on Friday at Carlisle, now retired from his British Horseracing Board top spot, and was pleased to see his homebred Tomasino win, trained by Mary Reveley and named after the owner's son, Thomas, seven, who collected the trophy. Further, the win gave jockey Kevin Darley his 50th this season.
Paul Morrison, the former owner of Arcalis, the Wylies' York Cup winner, had a winner with Pro Tempore, trained by Lynda Ramsden. He said he was delighted at the John Smith's win and hopes his former horse goes on to win the Champion Hurdle for his new owners.
