SCHOOLCHILDREN tucked into free fruit at a tasting session recently.
Sixty pupils at Newker Primary School, Waldridge Road, Chester-le-Street, took part in an activity day organised by school catering company, Scolarest and Durham County Council.
They tried fruit ranging from melons, lychees, mangos and pineapples to oranges, strawberries and tomatoes.
Scolarest group manager Karen Burke said: "Fruit is a healthy snack and a great source of natural vitamins.
"Importantly, eating fruit also helps protect children against serious illnesses in later life.
"The fruit tasting at Newker was a really fun way of encouraging pupils to eat more fruit and try different kinds."
Fresh fruit is on the menu every day at the school as one of the healthy snacks sold by the school's milk bar
