A TRANSPORT scheme for elderly and disabled patients has issued an urgent appeal for volunteers.

The Deerness Valley GP Car Scheme relies on drivers who give up their time and use their own vehicles to take people in the area to and from GP and clinic appointments.

The scheme has clocked up more than 100 journeys since it was set up last October.

"However, unless more volunteers can be found, the future of the scheme is at risk,'' said Stephen Metcalf, of the Durham County Council-led East Durham Rural Transport Partnership.

"The loss of the scheme would be a big disappointment for the local community and those people who use the scheme regularly.''

Dot Dowson, of Beaurepaire, Bearpark, who uses the scheme, said: "The scheme has been a fantastic help for me and for many other of the elderly residents of Beaurepaire.

"Many of us have difficulty walking and the scheme picks us up from our homes and takes us direct to the appointment.''

All out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed to volunteers and a rate of 40p per mile is paid.

Anyone wanting to volunteer for the project - for as little as one hour a week - should call Carol McAllister, of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme, on 0191-389 1155.
