STAFF and customers from a bookmakers are encouraging the artistic talents of young hospital patients.

The Northallerton branch of Ladbrokes set out to raise money for the children's unit at the town's Friarage Hospital.

They raised £100 with two events, guessing the number of sweets in a jar and a Euro 2004 football sweepstake.

The hospital is a subject close to manager Claire Monk's heart because her six-year-old daughter Amileigh has been a regular patient since she was three.

She decided to put forward the children's unit for a donation as a thank you to staff for caring for Amileigh.

She also wanted to help other children who use the hospital.

Sister Jo Kelsey, from the Friarage, said: "We would like to thank Ladbrokes staff and customers for thinking about us and for this very welcome donation.

"We will be using the money to buy art equipment so the children can have fun making mobiles and decorations, brightening up the unit, keeping them occupied and something they will enjoy at the same time."
