AN exhibition which uses artwork to create word and picture puzzles has opened at the University of Sunderland.
The Rebus exhibition features the work of 21 students taking masters degrees in fine art at the university.
The display takes the theme of Rebus word and picture puzzles and presents a diverse collection - including painting, drawing, art installations, sculpture and video - which visitors are invited to decipher.
Among the works on display are the abstract paintings of Tynemouth's Iris Houghton, whose lyrical work is based on her experiences sailing.
In contrast, the work of John Jones celebrates the stark beauty of the urban landscape of his native Leeds.
Sunderland's Sarah Smallwood creates sculptures, combining toys and domestic goods into huge, funny and puzzling monumental sculptures.
The exhibition was opened by the Deputy Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Bill Stephenson, and continues until this afternoon.
