MANAGEMENT at a village pub say the decision to become a smoke-free zone has paid dividends.
The Spotted Dog, at High Coniscliffe, near Darlington, introduced a smoking ban this year and was refurbished in June.
A sheltered corner has been provided for smokers outside the building.
Staff say the move has seen profits rise, as well as attracting a good response from customers.
Assistant manager Valerie Paterson said: "We wanted to be leaders, not followers, and there is nowhere else near here that offers this.
"Since we became non-smoking, several of our staff said they have lost the craving for a cigarette and reduced their intake."
