A SYCAMORE tree under threat of being felled has been given a reprieve.
The tree, at The Olde Barn, Bishop Middleham, is the subject of a tree preservation order but the owners want to cut it down.
Sedgefield Borough Council's development control committee considered a list of objections to the order.
In response to a claim that the tree was too big, officers suggested the 50-year-old tree, at 12m tall, was only a moderate size.
Fears that the tree might damage a nearby house were dismissed and planning officers said loss of light was not an issue.
Resin exuding from the leaves was not considered a health hazard and was an integral part of the ecosystem.
The issue of bees and wasps was considered, but officers decided insect activity would not interfere with the enjoyment of the garden.
Other concerns, including leaf litter and the possibility of the tree being a threat to public health, were dismissed.
Officers said an offer to replant the tree was a welcome gesture, but would remove its amenity value.
Councillors agreed that the tree preservation order should remain in place.
