A MURDER inquiry was launched yesterday after a man was stabbed in a city street.
Last night, a woman in her twenties, believed to be from Bell Farm Avenue, York, was still being questioned by police.
She was taken into custody shortly after the man's death.
Police were called soon before midnight on Monday where they found 23-year-old Simon Gilchrist lying in Bell Farm Avenue.
He was rushed to York District Hospital, where doctors were unable to save him.
A post-mortem examination last night showed that Mr Gilchrist had died of a single stab wound.
Yesterday, an area around the scene had been cordoned off, and Lisa Wilkinson, who lives nearby, said: "I am shaking like a leaf.
"I got up and looked out and saw that the street had been taped off.
"You hear about this sort of thing happening, but you don't imagine it happening in your own neighbourhood."
Detectives are seeking witnesses who may be able to help with their inquiries.
They want to hear from anyone in Bell Farm Avenue or in the adjoining areas of Huntington Road, Roche Avenue and Middleham Avenue, who heard or saw anything suspicious between 11pm on Monday and 12.30am yesterday.
Anyone with information is asked to contact them on (01904) 631321.
