Dog lovers across the North-East can breathe a sigh of relief after the region's MEP, Stephen Hughes, confirmed that butchers have not been banned by the EU from supplying bones to domestic pet owners. He said: "Dog owners throughout the region will no doubt rejoice in the fact that the EU has not stepped in to spoil one of their pet's simple pleasures. My border collie, Daisy, is delighted at the news."

DRUGS SEIZED: Drugs with a street value of £3,000 were seized in a raid on a home in Dawdon, Seaham, at the weekend. A police spokesman said bags of white powder believed to be amphetamine and a small amount of cannabis were removed. The 42-year-old householder was arrested and questioned before being released on bail.

ABANDONED CHILD: Michelle Coleman, 28, of Kirby Close, Darlington, admitted at the town's magistrates court yesterday, abandoning a child and not supervising a child, between September 1 and December 3 last year. She was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £50 costs.

A1 CLOSURES: A series of overnight closures between junctions 48 and 49 of the A1(M), Boroughbridge to Dishforth, is taking place until Thursday next week, while a communications gantry and electronic sensors in the road surface are installed.

HOLIDAY CITY: June was York's busiest month for tourism for more than five years, according to a survey by the Yorkshire Tourist Board. There was a record hotel bedroom occupancy of 74.8 per cent, compared to 65.9 per cent the previous year. City visitor attractions also reported a 12 per cent increase in attendances, although they were five per cent down in May.

DAREDEVILS SOUGHT: The Butterwick Hospice, Stockton, is seeking people to take part in a sponsored bungee jump at the Tees Barrage, near Stockton, on Saturday, August 28.
