TWO seminars to help businesses and community organisations get to grips with the Disability Discrimination Act are to be held in Richmond.

The town council agreed to make the town hall available for the events, organised by Disability Action in Richmondshire (Dair). Councillor Linda Curran, of Dair, said a similar seminar in Leyburn proved useful to all concerned.

Richmond business and tourism association would be invited to be involved in the session aimed at helping businesses to comply with the act. The second event would be aimed at community groups and charities. Dates have yet to be finalised.

Dair also volunteered to help review a disability survey carried out in the town some time ago, which resulted in a lift and disabled lavatory being installed at the town hall.

Coun Curran said issues such as the height of the town hall doorbell push, making people aware of the loop system for hearing impaired people, accessibility of the market hall and the staffing implications of the Act should be examined.
