Two men from the North-East who face football banning orders after they were kicked out of Portugal for rioting had their bail extended yesterday.

Peter Barwick, 37, from Thornaby, Teesside, appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court in West London in person to receive his renewed bail papers.

John Jackson, 22, from Newcastle, was excused from attending but was represented by a solicitor.

The pair were among eight other England football fans before the court facing football banning orders.

They include firefighter Garry Mann, 46, who was dubbed a hooligan ringleader by a Portuguese court.

Two other men also appeared in person to receive their renewed bail papers. They were David Jackson, 30, from Peterborough, and John Parkes, 19, from Dudley.

Those excused from attending were Mann, from Faversham, Kent; Richard Barker, 24, from Castleford, West Yorkshire; David Marsh, 20, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire; Matthew Smith, 24, from Shepford; Ricky Tsigarides, 21, from Cheshunt, Herts, and Andrew Williams, 22, from Burgess Hill, West Sussex.

All 10 men are to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court on November 22 for a pre-trial review. Their bail conditions were amended so they are now unconditional.

Mann was sentenced to two years in prison by a Portuguese judge before he was deported back to the UK.

Home Office officials have said Mann will not serve the prison sentence in the UK as there is no legislative framework to support it. Mann's solicitor, Look Chih Wang, said the fire fighter was appealing against the Portuguese court's decision and would further appeal to the Constitutional Court in Lisbon.
