A CARE home for the elderly is stepping up security after thieves stole a set of garden furniture from its grounds.

The theft of the £100 tables and chairs is the latest in a series of problems to hit the Pelton Grange nursing and residential home in Front Street, Pelton.

The home is now putting up a security fence to keep out youngsters.

Home manager Alicia Scott said the set was bought so residents could enjoy sitting out on the home's new patio.

But it was taken after the home held a barbecue to raise money for the residents' fund the weekend before last.

Ms Scott said: "We had a smashing evening and the money would have gone to buy a new stereo for upstairs but we we'll have to get a new set of furniture.

"I was so annoyed to think that they had the gall to come in and do that. They have no respect.

"We try out best but there is a certain element that doesn't want to see anybody have a good time.

"For some of the residents sitting on the patio is the only enjoyment they have.''

Miss Scott said that a gazebo in the grounds was set on fire last year and a lawnmower had been stolen. A wire fence had also been pulled down and would be replaced with a security fence to stop youngsters getting in.

Inspector Dave Marshall, of Chester-le-Street police, said officers were investigating the theft.

He said there had been problems of youngsters causing a nuisance in Front Street and that some had been given written warnings and one was facing an anti-social behaviour order.

"We take the problem very seriously and we are working with the parish council and other agencies to solve it."
