A police crime reduction team has advised householders to take steps to ensure they are not victims of crime during the summer holidays.
Tom Clifford of the Derwentside Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership said: "Before you go lock all doors and windows - you would be suprised at how many people forget. And cancel any deliveries like milk and newspapers.
"We would also advise people to ask a neighbour to keep an eye out on their property and leave some keys with them, so that they can shut the blinds or curtains on an evening and pick up the post."
Mr Clifford said: "For those staying at home, remember to keep your doors locked if you are sitting outside, as sneak-in thieves enjoy an open invitation.
"Put bikes and other valuables away after use and lock them away wherever possible.
"Recent crime statistics for England and Wales showed Derwentside to have one of the lowest burglary rates in the country.
"We want to keep it that way."
