CAMPAIGNERS who successfully fought to save a playing field being lost to development have formally wound up their campaign.
Members of Washington First Forum started a campaign to save the Sports Arena at Princess Anne Park in Washington seven years ago.
In September they learned the House of Lords agreed with their claim that the Sports Arena should be registered as a town or village green to protect it from development.
City of Sunderland Council has accepted the Lords' decision and agreed to register the Sports Arena.
Acting chairman of Washington First Forum Robert Duggan said: "We have waited seven years to hear the good news that the Sports Arena is protected for future generations of Washington people to enjoy.
"We were never opposed to the building of a new college in Washington; our only opposition was to the site that had been chosen. It is excellent news that the college is not to be built on the Usworth School site and we wish the new college every success."
The forum had its last meeting to put the group to bed. After paying off debts it had £250 in its kitty, which it donated to the Friends of Princess Anne Park.
