MIDDLESBROUGH town centre will host an open air gallery next month when Gallery TS1 takes up residency in Captain Cook Square.
The scheme is an arts apprenticeship scheme for young people during the summer.
The idea was developed by Middlesbrough Council's Cultural Services based on a project initiated in Chicago and developed in Birmingham.
Through creative arts opportunities, it aims to motivate and inspire the 25 young people chosen to take part.
From Monday, August 16, participants will attend training sessions to learn arts and crafts skills to create high quality arts items for display and sale in an on-site shop.
Project co-ordinator Mike McGrother said: "This is a project that really has the potential to break down barriers of whatever kind."
Councillor David Budd, executive member for regeneration and culture, said: "This project demonstrates that Middlesbrough is a town packed with creative talent and young people who want to make a difference for themselves and for others.
"As well as providing a real training opportunity for those with most potential but least opportunity, the project will contribute to the ambience of the town, an aspect we hope will develop."
The public will be able to see work in progress and speak to trainees and artists.
