DARLINGTON manager David Hodgson believes Curtis Fleming's wealth of experience in the game will be a major asset to the club after signing the former Middlesbrough defender on a free transfer.

Despite lucrative offers from Scotland and his native Ireland, Fleming yesterday signed a one-year contract with Quakers after a successful pre-season stint at the New Stadium.

The 35-year-old returned to the North-East, where his family is based, after leaving Crystal Palace at the end of last season.

Fleming's wife is expecting their third child and the player was keen to end his playing days back in the region.

Fleming spent ten years on Teesside, where he made over 250 appearances and represented the Republic of Ireland on ten occasions.

"Curtis has looked a cut above the rest in pre-season and he was one player we could not ignore," said Hodgson.

"As a football club we are always looking for opportunities to take the club forward and with his experience, Curtis will help us achieve that.

"He has shown his qualities in pre-season and I'm sure the other lads can learn from him."

Fleming's arrival means Hodgson can sign just one more player before the start of the season, after former Sunderland striker Craig Russell penned a one-year deal this week.

Quakers are not expected to come out of administration until August 5 and until then are only allowed 20 players in their squad.

And with Hodgson yet to end his summer-long search for a striker, tomorrow's friendly with Peterborough will allow the Quakers boss to make further checks on trialists Sebastien Ferrero and Kim Grant.

Hodgson, however, will not be following up his interest in Lens striker Ibrahima N'Diaye.

The Senegalese forward has been sent home after breaking a club curfew.

Plymouth striker Stewart Yetton will begin training with the club next week, with a view to joining the club on loan when the transfer embargo is lifted next month.

The highly-rated youngster played just once last season, in the 3-1 win at Hartlepool United, Argyle's penultimate game.

Hodgson has decided to turn his attentions elsewhere after Boro turned down his latest approach for striker Danny Graham.
