A WORLD of communications has opened up for five Richmond School students who gained their foundation radio amateurs' licences.
The pupils can now transmit on selected amateur radio bands to contact other operators around the globe.
Nathan McGarry, Stephen McVay, John Coultish, Sam Watkinson and George Parkes passed the Ofcom exam at school shortly before the summer break.
The school is one of only a handful in the UK with radio societies.
Students transmit around the world during most lunchtimes.
Richmond has an amateur radio repeater station, callsign GB3IR, on the Gallowfields trading estate, which provides a gateway to all parts of the world via radio and the Internet.
The students' enthusiasm for amateur radio has spread to the community and demand from members of the public interested in the hobby has led to a foundation licence course running from September.
Sessions are held in the community education centre on the school campus and cater for people aged from eight years.
Details course are available from the community education office on (01748) 850171.
