HAVING put Stockton on the map for water sports, enthusiasts have been pulling their weight to ensure the Teesside town retains world attention.
Seven countries competed in the two-day European dragon boat championships held on the River Tees, at Stockton at the weekend. Russia entered three teams.
Stockton's Powerhouse Dragons made up 22 of the 26-strong Great Britain senior squad. And the racing on Saturday brought medals for both local junior and female team members.
Powerhouse spokesman Arthur West said: "This is one of the largest ever representations from one club.
"From a team of 26 this is an enormous achievement and shows why we are at the top of the standard league and in line for promotion to the premier league
"This was the goal we set at the beginning of the season, the motivation and commitment of our paddlers along with the tough training plans of our coach have put Powerhouse and Teesside firmly on the map.
"It's probably the biggest event of its kind on the river at Stockton, but also a major event for the country."
