A MAN who was dragged along the road after getting out of a taxi has died.
The 58-year-old, who has not been named, spent three weeks fighting for his life in Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, but died on Friday.
Police were only informed of the accident after his death and have now launched an investigation.
The taxi dropped the man off opposite the fire station in the Fossway, Newcastle, in the early hours of Saturday, July 10.
Police believe his leg may have become wrapped up in the seat belt after the car door had closed.
He was dragged for several yards along the road when the taxi set off.
A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "The incident was not reported to police until the man died last Friday and we are now trying to establish the exact circumstances leading to his injuries."
Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact the force's motor patrols division on 0191-214 6555, extension 62799.
