YOUNGSTERS from north Durham had the chance to try fishing recently.
About 50 children aged ten to 16 spent the day at Derwent reservoir as part of a project organised by Northumbrian Water.
Don Coe, Northumbrian Water's fisheries and waterside parks manager, said: "Many children, particularly from cities and towns, don't get the opportunity to enjoy the outdoor country environment.
"This course gives them an incentive and an interest which they will hopefully continue with. Fishing can help them avoid boredom and keep them out of trouble."
Two more days are planned during national Go Fishing week. The first will be held at Derwent reservoir for children from Northumberland and Tyneside on August 24.
Youngsters from the Tees Valley can enjoy a course at Scaling Dam reservoir on the North Yorkshire border on August 26.
The project is part of the police-backed Get Hooked on Fishing initiative, supported by the Environment Agency.
