THE hands of time have been turned back with the restoration of the Victorian clock in Middlesbrough's Albert Park.
The clock was a gift from councillor, alderman and Mayor of Middlesbrough Thomas Sanderson, to mark the end of his association with the town in 1899.
The restoration work has been carried out by Heritage Engineering, of Glasgow, using copies of the original designs of Walter MacFarlane and Co, also from Glasgow.
Last February, the clock was sent to be repaired and refurbished but when the specialists dismantled the clock they found it was corroded far more than anyone thought.
With £40,000 funding from Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Middlesbrough Council, restoration has been carried out and the clock has been remounted on its original base.
Paul Rabbitts, project manager, said: "Finishing touches to the HLF funded £4.4m refurbishment of the park are now taking place and we are preparing for the summer finale and re-opening of the park under the banner Pleasure in the Park, a celebration of fun, music, carnival and fairs on September 18."
