AN open day held to raise awareness of a club for people with mobility problems has been rated a great success.
Newton Aycliffe Mobility Club gained members and volunteers following the event held at the town's new youth centre yesterday.
The Mayor of Great Aycliffe, Councillor Maude Gray, attended the event, which also included a buffet and raffle.
Club member Sandra Manners said: "It was brilliant. The purpose of the day was to get our club more noticed in Newton Aycliffe.
"We're run from the British Legion and a lot of people don't get in there, so this was about opening us up to the public, letting them know what we're all about and attracting some young blood."
She said many people had perceived the club as being for mainly older people in wheelchairs. But this event helped to dispel that image, resulting in five new members all eager to take part in club activities.
The club has also launched a logo competition, entry forms for which were included in information packs handed out at the open day.
The results of the competition will be announced in September and the winning logo will be used to help promote the club.
